Colorado Kate

Balancing humor and professionalism in a brand for a Colorado couples photographer

Brand Strategy / Visual Identity / Web Design & Development — Denver, Colorado

Brand Evolution

Where Colorado Kate Began…

Kate is all about honesty and connection. And she gains both with humor. It’s what she loves about photographing people; she gets to make them laugh and then they open up in front of her lens. For years, she always felt that honesty and connection in her sessions with couples. And she was able to infuse a little bit of that tone into her social media captions. But she could never figure out how to balance being professional with the humor her clients love about her.

Where Colorado Kate Is Headed…

Kate thought she had to sacrifice her personality to sound professional on her site to get hired. She didn’t realize that the very thing she was avoiding was the thing that could move her business forward. We wanted to create a visual identity that showed she was an experienced pro when it couples to couples in Colorado, but pair it with playful photos and words to express the unmatched vibes she brings in person and to her sessions. We wanted the site to look and feel like her.

Brand Keywords

Trustworthy — Fun — Genuine — Confident

Target Audience

Sasha, 28, is a communications professional at an agency in downtown Denver. She loves living in the city, but she likes to get out of town and head to the mountains as often as possible with her fiance, Dan. The mountains are where they feel like they get to slow down and connect with each other the most, so when they got engaged, they knew this is where they wanted to get married. They value time together, fun experiences, and their closest relationships so their wedding will be a small elopement, with 20 people, their closest friends and family.

Visual Rational

Since the whole site needed to feel balanced, we leaned into clean and crisp visuals for the primary logos and marks and then paired it with bold colors to match Kate’s personality. Her clients talk over and over about how much they appreciate who she is, so the site needed to feel like Kate makes her clients feel. Colorado is obviously a big part of her brand (check out the name!), so we used the aspen tree as a very direct nod to Kate’s location.

In Kate’s Words

“I cannot say enough amazing things about Telltale. First of all, while I'm a photographer, my design game is not strong at all. I didn't even know what I wanted. Lydia took my old site I had designed (cringe) and turned it into a gorgeous, beautiful, cohesive, grown-up site that clearly communicates to my perfect clients. I could not be more thrilled with the product.

That's the product, but let's talk about her customer service skills. She goes above and beyond. She had answered all my questions, emails and phone calls quickly. She made me laugh and helped me get on track. I was absolutely thrilled.

Lydia is an amazing person and talented designer and she takes amazing care of her clients. I cannot recommend her enough!”

If you’ve made it this deep into our site, you probably already know that collaboration is our favorite. This project was a team effort with the help of Rachel Greiman on copywriting and Amber Ladd on website development.
